Most trim levels come with the efficient 2.5-liter 4-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder. You can expect an estimated 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway from this engine with 182-hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. The Onyx Edition, Limited XT, and Touring XT trim levels have a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine that produces 260-hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. This edition has an estimated fuel efficiency of 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.
No matter which engine is equipped on your Outback, it will come with the Lineartronic CVT that includes an 8-speed manual mode and steering wheel paddle shifters. This engine and transmission combination will provide great towing capability too. The 2.5-liter engine offers a maximum 2700 lb. towing capacity, while the 2.4-liter turbo provides up to 3500 lb. towing capacity. The 8.7-inch ground clearance exceeds that of many SUVs without affecting the step-in height for driver and passengers. In addition to the Symmetrical AWD system, the Outback comes with other excellent systems such as Vehicle Dynamics Control, Hill Descent Control, and Active Torque Vectoring.
