Looking for a New Vehicle?
Purchasing a new vehicle is a big decision, especially when deciding the perfect time. Next to purchasing a home, purchasing a vehicle is one of the biggest purchases you’ll decide on in your life. Before you jump headlong into the decision, ask yourself these important questions:
Is It Time to Buy a New Vehicle?
Is It the Right Time? – Is your current vehicle becoming more and more unreliable? Or do you not have a vehicle currently? Both of these reasons are valid in deciding whether it’s the right time to splurge on a new vehicle or not.
What is My Budget Like? – Can you afford a new vehicle? Make a personal budget of your current expenses and decide what you can comfortably afford in terms of insurance, monthly payments, tags, and fuel expenses. Remember to also figure in possible emergency expenses.
New vs PreOwned? – A new car means putting all the miles on it and starting from scratch, but it can also mean more expense up front. A used vehicle will have mileage and may need maintenance or repairs more often. If you look at Certified PreOwned, you could get excellent value pricing, mileage, and even warranties on your purchase.
Most Important Features? – What features do you like in your current vehicle? What do you dislike? What are you missing? All of these are valid questions when deciding on a possible vehicle option.
What Type of Vehicle? – Do you want to deviate from your current body style or typical brand? Shopping around different types of vehicles will help you narrow down what your needs and wants are.

Here are some easy ways you can winterize your vehicle and know that you are ready to tackle any challenging weather road conditions in Mid-Michigan and beyond!
Tips for Preparing Your Subaru for Winter
Stock Your Car – Carry items in your vehicle that can handle common winter-related tasks. This can include an ice scraper (or a combo scraper/brush), sand or kitty litter, blankets, and an extra phone charger. We also recommend a stocked first aid kit, and essentials like jumper cables, a flashlight, and emergency markers.
Easy Maintenance Tasks – Make sure you replace your windshield wipers and top up your windshield washer fluid; you don’t want streaks of snow inhibiting your vision. Checking and replacing your burnt out exterior lights will ensure others can see you during low visibility weather. We also recommend ensuring you always have an adequate fuel level during the wintertime so your don’t risk running out of gas.
Service Appointment Recommendations – Proper tire inflation and deep tread are important to tires during winter driving. If your current tires are lacking in tread or you have noticed air leaking, get them replaced before snow hits. We also recommend having your battery tested and ensure it is holding a charge. There’s nothing worse than a dead battery during cold weather!

Six Tips to Make the Most of Your Vehicle Test Drive
Buying a new or new-to-you vehicle is a big decision and by taking a test drive, you can determine whether you’ve picked the right option or not. We consider the test drive one of the most important steps to take when deciding on either a new or a used option. Take this opportunity to test out features and take on different roads to make a decision. Here are some ways you can maximize your test drive!
Six Tips We Recommend For Your Test Drive
Get In the Driving Seat – Adjusting the driver’s seat to your height and comfort level might seem obvious but it’s important! Adjust your mirrors, play around with the radio, familiarize yourself with the vents… these are all things you usually do anyway. This could even include seeing if your phone pairs with the vehicle’s Bluetooth easily.
Picture Your Cargo – Whether it’s your children, your children and their things, or just a trunk full of groceries, be sure you are buying a vehicle with enough space. By bringing your family with to the test drive, it allows you to check legroom and trunk space to know if a vehicle is big enough for your needs.
Get a Sense of Ride Comfort – Alongside testing legroom and other space, when you are actually driving the vehicle is when you can get a sense of suspension and the comfort of the ride for all passengers. This is especially helpful during a test drive of a used vehicle.
Evaluate the Acceleration and Braking Power – Picture your daily commute or the roads you frequent – are there any steep hills? By testing both the acceleration and braking power, you can determine whether the power is suitable for your driving style. If you still like the vehicle but aren’t impressed with the power, ask to see a higher trim level.
Test the Handling – Taking the vehicle on a highway drive, winding roads, and bumpy roads can give you a clear picture of how the vehicle will handle different driving conditions. Be sure to ask for recommendations on roads to try out with the salesperson.
Take Your Time – Because purchasing a vehicle is such a big decision, you may want to take your time with deciding, and we agree! If you need to come back to test drive in different weather conditions, you should do what you need to make an educated decision.

The Subaru Outback remains a top choice for those seeking a reliable and versatile SUV, known for its robust performance, advanced safety features, and spacious interiors. This comparison highlights the differences and similarities between the 2025 and 2024 models.
Exterior Design
The 2025 and 2024 Subaru Outbacks maintain a rugged and functional design characteristic of the brand’s SUV lineup. They feature similar dimensions, providing ample ground clearance for off-road capabilities. The styling includes a bold front grille and sleek LED headlights. While color options remain consistent, the newer model offers additional hues to keep up with contemporary trends.
Performance
Both models perform similarly, with each offering a standard 2.5-liter flat-four engine. Fuel Efficiency

The turbocharged option slightly reduces these numbers but offers improved performance for those willing to sacrifice some efficiency.

2025 Subaru Legacy Compared to 2025 Toyota Camry
2025 Subaru Legacy vs. 2025 Toyota Camry: Which Midsize Sedan is Better?
The 2025 Subaru Legacy and the 2025 Toyota Camry are popular choices in the midsize sedan segment. However, the Legacy stands out with its value-packed offerings, standard all-wheel drive, and advanced safety features, making it the smarter choice for buyers. In this comparison, we’ll dive into the design, performance, fuel efficiency, interior comfort, safety features, pricing, trims, and warranties of these two models to see why the Legacy is the superior option.
Exterior Design
The 2025 Subaru Legacy delivers an exterior design emphasizing function and style paired perfectly. Its subtle styling is enhanced by standard LED headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels on some trims, creating an understated and modern look. Subaru offers a sensible color palette for drivers who want a sedan with timeless appeal.
In contrast, the 2025 Toyota Camry tries too hard with its aggressive front grille and angular body lines, giving off a vibe that may feel forced for many buyers. Its over-styled exterior lacks the refined elegance of the Legacy, making the Subaru a better choice..
Performance
Performance is where the 2025 Subaru Legacy pulls ahead considerably. It features a standard 2.5-liter 4 cyl. engine producing 182 horsepower, paired with Subaru’s legendary symmetrical AWD system. This gives the Legacy superior traction and handling, especially in bad weather, a key advantage over the Camry. For those looking for more power, the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine in the Sport and Touring XT trims delivers 260 horsepower, offering smooth and robust acceleration.
Fuel Efficiency
The 2025 Subaru Legacy delivers respectable fuel economy with its base engine, achieving an estimated 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The more powerful turbocharged engine, available in the Sport and Touring XT trims, offers an estimated 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, a reasonable trade-off for the added performance.
The 2025 Toyota Camry does better in terms of fuel efficiency, due to its all-hybrid powertrain. However, the Camry’s lack of standard AWD means that drivers in snowy or rainy climates may face reduced safety and performance, making the Legacy the better-rounded choice.
Interior and Comfort
The 2025 Subaru Legacy shines in interior quality, with a spacious cabin and an intuitive 7-inch or 11.6-inch touchscreen interface available depending on the trim level. The Legacy offers comfortable seating with high-quality materials even at the base trim level, making it an excellent option for families or long-distance commuters. Rear-seat passengers will appreciate the ample legroom, and the trunk’s 15.1 cubic feet of space adds practicality.
The 2025 Toyota Camry, while featuring a comparable interior design, falls short in terms of space. Its infotainment system, with an 8-inch touchscreen standard in all trims, feels outdated compared to the Legacy’s modern setup. The Camry’s cramped rear seats and slightly smaller trunk make it less comfortable for families and long trips, further solidifying the Legacy’s edge in overall interior comfort.
Safety Features
The 2025 Subaru Legacy offers a robust safety suite with Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, including adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and pre-collision braking across all trims. Subaru’s AWD system enhances driving safety, especially in inclement weather, making the Legacy one of the safest choices in its segment.
While the 2025 Toyota Camry also includes Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.5+ system with similar safety features, it lacks the standard AWD that the Legacy offers. This omission disadvantages the Camry, particularly for buyers in regions where weather conditions are a concern.
Price and Trims
The 2025 Subaru Legacy offers a range of trims at highly competitive prices:
- Base Trim – Starting at $24,895, this entry-level model includes AWD, dual 7-inch touchscreens, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the full EyeSight safety suite.
- Premium Trim—For around $27,195, the Premium adds an 11.6-inch touchscreen, heated front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
- Sport Trim – The Sport trim, starting at $34,495, features a turbocharged engine and sportier design elements for those seeking more excitement.
- Limited Trim—Priced at $34,005, the Limited offers luxury with leather seating, a Harman Kardon audio system, and heated rear seats.
- Touring XT Trim – At $38,195, the top-tier Touring XT includes ventilated front seats, a turbocharged engine, and premium technology features.
The 2025 Toyota Camry, by comparison, starts at $28,400 MSRP for its base LE trim and can reach up to nearly $40,000 for higher trims like the XSE and TRD models with the V6 engine. However, the Camry’s lack of AWD at lower trims and its higher pricing make the Legacy the more cost-effective and capable choice, particularly for buyers seeking all-weather performance.
Reliability and Warranty
Both Subaru and Toyota are known for their reliability, and both offer a similar warranty package: a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. However, Subaru’s reputation for building durable, AWD-equipped vehicles gives the Legacy for buyers seeking dependability.
Pros and Differences
The 2025 Subaru Legacy outperforms the 2025 Toyota Camry in most critical areas. The Legacy’s standard AWD, better pricing, superior interior technology, and comprehensive safety features make it the better choice for buyers who prioritize practicality and value. The Camry may appeal to those seeking improved fuel economy, but it simply cannot match the Legacy’s all-around versatility and safety.

How Do I Accurately Check My Vehicle’s Oil?
The motor oil in your vehicle is what keeps your engine running, so knowing how to check your oil level is very important. Keeping an eye on it regularly can help you catch if there is anything wrong and if the levels are getting too low too quickly. Motor oil lubricates the engine’s internal moving pieces so those pieces do not break down too quickly. It also helps to keep your engine clean, prevents overheating, and prevents dirt build-up.
Checking Your Engine’s Oil
Before you even start, your vehicle must be on even ground and not slanting. This will allow you to get an accurate read on the level of your oil. Be sure the engine is off and cooled down. Have some paper towels nearby.
When you open the hood, just locate the dipstick (which is generally in a bright color like yellow or orange) and pull it out. Use your paper towel to wipe the dipstick instead of reading the level since it will not be accurate. Then insert it into the tank again, and then pull it out once more. The oil sitting on the dipstick should show you the level your tank is at and if you need to add any oil. If it is below the minimum mark, add a small amount of oil (approved by your vehicle’s manufacturer guidelines) and see if it levels out. If you re-check and it still shows lower than the minimum mark, add more until it is sufficient but not overfilled. This could mean your vehicle is burning too much oil or leaking and needs to be evaluated by a mechanic.
Checking the color of the oil is also important the first time you remove the dipstick. Oil should be a dark color like brown or black. If there is a lighter appearance or a milkiness, you may have coolant leaking into your engine and mixing, which means you need to schedule a service appointment. You want to check for metal particles too – it may indicate an internal engine issue you may not have known about.
Bring Your Subaru Into Thelen Subaru in Michigan
If you’ve followed these steps and find that your Subaru has a potential issue, schedule an appointment with our expert service center! Thelen Subaru in Bay City, Michigan, employs a knowledgeable team of skilled mechanics that can assist you with oil changes and other potential engine issues. Schedule your service appointment today!

A well-functioning engine is essential when driving your vehicle.
Imagine you’re driving your Subaru around and suddenly you hear a strange noise coming from your engine. Do you ignore it or do you bring it in to get it checked out? Below we will go over some common noises your engine may make if it’s time for a service appointment.
Should My Engine Be Making This Noise?
Squealing – If a sudden squealing noise begins, you may instantly be concerned. This annoying sound is often related to a loose or worn-out belt. But, it could also be your steering system. It is best to have the vehicle checked over soon.
Rough Idling – If you’re dealing with rough idling, there could be any number of issues; dirty fuel injectors, faulty spark plugs, or something wrong with your air intake system. Rough idling can affect your fuel consumption and can cause your engine to stall. Again, it is important to have an expert technician check the vehicle.
Hissing or Sizzling – If you experience a sizzling or hissing sound when you shut off your engine, you may be dealing with a leak. Your oil or your coolant reservoir may be leaking and this issue needs to be addressed sooner rather than later as it can cause engine overheating.
Grinding – With the many systems running in your vehicle, you can hear grinding pop up in multiple areas. But specifically in the engine, you may be dealing with worn-out bearings. A grinding noise is highly important and should be checked out ASAP.
Schedule Your Service Appointment at Thelen Subaru
If you have been experiencing these or any other noises that you don’t recognize your engine making, it is time to bring your Subaru in for servicing. Thelen Subaru in Bay City, Michigan, has a team of experienced service technicians who can diagnose your engine problems and service it correctly. Schedule your appointment today!
